Windows update shows an error code and won't install

Windows update errors are caused by a temporary glitch, a failed previous update, or not enough disk space. Restart your computer and try the update again. That fixes it in most cases. If the error code comes back, free up space on your C: drive because Windows needs at least 5 GB to update successfully.

Windows Updates sometimes fail because of connection issues, corrupted update files, or not having enough space on your hard drive. The error code is Windows telling you something went wrong, but most of the time it's temporary. A restart clears out the stuck update and lets Windows try again from scratch. If the same error code keeps appearing, it means either your drive is too full or there's a deeper issue that needs more troubleshooting.
