What is an IP address?

An IP address is a number that identifies your device on the internet. It's like a mailing address for your computer — it tells the internet where to send information to reach you.

IP stands for Internet Protocol. Every device connected to the internet has an IP address. It looks like four numbers separated by dots, like 192.168.1.100. When you request a website, your IP address is included with that request. The website sends the data back to your IP address so it reaches your computer. Your router assigns your devices local IP addresses for your home network, and your internet service provider assigns your home a public IP address.
