Search isn't working in Outlook — no results showing
Outlook search isn't working because either the search index is corrupt or you haven't set up search properly. Close Outlook completely, wait 10 seconds, and open it again — this resets the search and fixes it for most people. If that doesn't work, go to Settings and rebuild the search index.
Outlook relies on an index of all your emails to search quickly — think of it like an address book that tells Outlook where each email is. If the index gets corrupted or broken, search stops working. The fix is restarting Outlook, but if that doesn't work, we can rebuild the index from scratch.
Fix-IT-Bot will walk you through each step — just tap, no typing needed.
Skip — I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Not waiting for the index to rebuild — this can take 30 minutes or longer for large mailboxes. Don't close Outlook while it's working.
- Searching with special characters like asterisks or quotes — Outlook search doesn't always recognize these. Try searching for plain words instead.
- Thinking the problem is with Outlook when the problem is that the email doesn't exist yet — check with the sender to confirm they sent it
Signs you need professional help
- You've restarted Outlook and rebuilt the search index but search is still not working
- Search only works for recent emails but can't find anything older than a few months
- You see error messages about the search index being corrupt
