How to set up port forwarding for gaming or security cameras

Port forwarding tells your router to send incoming traffic on a specific port to a specific device on your network. You log into your router, find the port forwarding settings, enter the port number and your device's internal IP address, and save the changes. It takes about 5 minutes and fixes the problem straight away.

When someone tries to reach your gaming server or camera from outside your home, your router doesn't know which device to send that traffic to. Port forwarding fixes this by creating a rule that says 'when someone connects on port X, send them to device Y'. This is safe when you only forward ports for services you actually use.
