Keyboard backlight not turning on or staying off
Keyboard backlights have a control key — Fn plus a light bulb or arrow icon. Press it a few times to cycle through brightness levels. If that doesn't work, the battery in the keyboard is probably drained or the backlight driver on your computer needs updating.
Your keyboard backlight is controlled by a combination of keys and software drivers on your computer. When it stops working, it's because the keyboard is out of battery, the backlight setting is turned all the way down, or the software driving it has crashed. The quickest fix is pressing the backlight control key a few times — if nothing happens, charge the keyboard or restart your computer.
Fix-IT-Bot will walk you through each step — just tap, no typing needed.
Skip — I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Looking for a backlight setting in Settings instead of using the physical control key on the keyboard
- Giving up after restarting once — sometimes driver updates take two restarts to fully load
- Assuming the keyboard is broken when it's actually just out of battery
Signs you need professional help
- You've tried charging the keyboard and it still won't backlight
- The backlight works on some keys but not others — this means the light is failing
- Nothing has worked after a full restart and driver update
