No sound coming from Mac speakers

Your Mac sound is muted or the output is routed to the wrong device. Check the volume in the menu bar, unmute the audio, and select the right speaker device.

When your Mac is silent, it's because sound is muted, the wrong output device is selected, or the volume is too low. We'll unmute it, check the speaker selection, and restart the audio system if needed.

  • Check that your Mac isn't in Silent mode — look for the Silent toggle next to the volume control
  • Make sure external speakers are plugged in and turned on if you're using them
  • Note whether sound worked recently or if this is new
