iMessage stuck waiting for activation

iMessage activation fails because of poor WiFi or cellular connection, wrong Apple ID, or your carrier blocking SMS. Check your internet is strong, make sure you're signed in with the right Apple ID, and try turning iMessage off and back on. If it still doesn't work after 15 minutes, your carrier can need to allow SMS for activation.

iMessage activation is like getting a confirmation code when you sign up for a new service. Your iPhone needs to send a text (SMS) to Apple's servers to confirm your phone number and Apple ID. If your connection is weak, your Apple ID is wrong, or your carrier is blocking SMS, the activation fails. Most of the time it's just a weak connection — waiting a bit and trying again fixes it.
