What is BIOS/UEFI and when you'd ever need to access it

BIOS/UEFI is low-level firmware that starts when you power on your computer. It checks that everything is working, then loads your operating system. Most people never need to access it.

When you press the power button, BIOS (or UEFI on modern computers) runs before Windows or Mac loads. It initializes hardware, runs a quick self-test, and then loads your operating system from the hard drive. You rarely need to access it unless you're installing a new OS, changing boot order, or updating firmware.
