Console says not enough space to download or update a game

Your console storage is full. Deleting old games or saved data that you're not using makes room for the update. Most updates need 50-100GB of free space.

Game updates require temporary storage space while they download and install, even if you already own the game. When your console runs out of space, the update fails. We'll check how much space you have, delete games or cached data you don't need, and make room for the update to complete.

Check how much storage space you have available

This tells you exactly how much space you need to free up and which console you're using.

Go to Settings → Storage or System Storage
Look for the total storage capacity and the free space available — you should see both as a number in GB
Go back to try the update again to see if you now have enough free space

Don't turn off the console during a game deletion or transfer — let it finish completely
Don't delete games you care about to make space — use external drives or just accept older games won't fit
Don't try to update multiple games at the same time — each needs its own free space

Delete games you no longer play

Removing old games is the quickest way to free up large amounts of space immediately.

Go to My Games or Library on your console
Highlight a game you haven't played in months and don't plan to play again
Press Options or Menu and select Delete, Remove, or Uninstall
Confirm the deletion and let it complete
Check storage again and try the update to see if it now fits

Clear system cache to remove temporary files

Caches store temporary data that can build up over time and take up significant space.

Go to Settings → Storage → Clear Cache or System Cache
Select Clear All or Delete Cache
Wait for the console to finish clearing — this usually takes a few minutes
Go back to Storage to check how much space was freed up

Move games to an external drive if you have one

External storage lets you keep games without using console space — updates still need room on the console though.

If you have an external hard drive plugged into your console, go to My Games or Library
Highlight a game and select Move or Transfer
Choose External Drive as the destination — the game will copy over and free up console space
Wait for the transfer to complete
Check storage and try the update to see if it now has enough space

Delete saved game data or apps you don't need

Saved games and apps take up space too. Deleting old saves from games you've finished frees up more room.

Go to Settings → Storage → Saved Data or Game Saves
Look at the list and find games you've finished or don't play anymore
Highlight each one and select Delete to remove the saved data
Check Settings → Storage again to see how much space was freed

Try the game update again now that you have space

With freed-up space, the update should download and install without hitting the storage limit.

Go to My Games and find the game that needs updating
Select it and choose Update or Check for Updates
Let the download and installation complete — don't turn off the console during this time
Once complete, launch the game to confirm the update worked and you can play
