Network switch port not giving a device an IP address
The switch port is disabled or the cable isn't seated properly. First, unplug the cable from both ends, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in firmly. Make sure you hear or feel it click. If the port light still doesn't come on, the port is disabled in the switch settings.
Your switch gives devices their IP addresses through DHCP. That's how they join the network. When a port goes dead, it's either because the cable isn't connected properly, something is blocking the port, or the port itself is disabled in the switch settings. The quickest fix is to reseat the cable. If the light still doesn't come on, you need to reset the port or check the switch settings.

- Disabling a port in the switch without realizing you're disabling the whole segment, not just one device
- Assuming your computer is broken when the issue is the switch or network settings
Signs you need professional help
- The port light still won't turn on after reseating the cable The port is enabled in settings but your computer still won't get an IP address Multiple ports on the same switch have stopped working
