Microsoft Teams status stuck on Away even when you're working
Teams sets you to Away automatically after about 5 minutes of no mouse or keyboard activity. To stay Available, move your mouse or press a key occasionally. If the status is actually stuck, restart the Teams app — close it completely and reopen it.
Teams automatically marks you as Away when it doesn't sense any keyboard or mouse activity for a few minutes. This is to show colleagues you're not at your desk. If you're working but not moving the mouse — like during a long call or reading — Teams thinks you're idle. The fix is either moving occasionally, changing Teams settings, or restarting the app if it gets stuck.
Fix-IT-Bot will walk you through each step — just tap, no typing needed.
Skip — I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Thinking Teams is broken when it's working correctly — Away is the right status if there's no mouse or keyboard activity, even if you're at your desk
- Closing just the Teams window instead of fully quitting the app — the background process keeps running, so restart doesn't work
- Leaving Teams running in the background on an old monitor or disconnected device — that can show you as Away at your main desk
Signs you need professional help
- Your status is stuck on Away and restarting the Teams app doesn't fix it
- Your computer is awake and active but Teams still shows Away
- You're seeing Away status on multiple devices and colleagues are confused about your availability
