Can't find a file someone shared with you in SharePoint
SharePoint shares can sometimes not show in your main view right away. Click the link the person sent you directly, or go to Shared with me to find recent shares. If you get an access error, ask the person who shared it to add you with the correct permissions — they can have shared it as view-only by mistake.
Files shared in SharePoint need both a direct link and the right permissions. Even if the link works, you can not see the file in your main folder if you don't have the right permissions. The fix is to use the direct link the person sent you, or ask them to share it properly with edit permissions if you need to make changes.

Skip — I just want a technicianCommon mistakes to avoid
- Not using the direct link the person sent — trying to find it by browsing takes much longer than just clicking the link
- Asking for edit permissions when you only need to view the file — view-only is fine if you're not making changes
- Blaming the other person for the share not working — it's a permissions setting they can fix in seconds
Signs you need professional help
- The person says they shared it but you can't find a link or notification anywhere
- You get a permission error and the person confirms they shared it with you — IT can check why permissions didn't come through
- You're part of the SharePoint site but the file is completely invisible — it can have been deleted or moved
