What is an APK file and is it safe to install?

An APK is just the file format Android uses. It's like a .exe on Windows. Apps from Google Play Store are already APKs. Installing an APK from strangers or untrusted websites is risky, but APK files themselves aren't dangerous.

APK stands for Android Package Kit. It's the format that holds all the code and resources needed to run an Android app. Think of it like a folder that's been zipped up and sealed. You install APKs from Google Play Store every time you download an app. But you can also install APK files from other sources if you allow it.
